I have never enjoyed a textbook as much as I enjoyed this one. I've recommended it to people who are not students. Well written and effectively illustrates the application of social science theory. Very up to date with information about internet communications, LGBTQ communities and cross-cultural resources. Well organized. My only complaint is the persistent criticism of Tanner's research.I tried to use the online resources, LaunchPad" and that was a nightmare. It was very difficult to register for it. once I finally almost made free intro work, I was days behind on my assignment. I tried to use the online materials to study for a test and the LaunchPad server had crashed, which I learned after being on hold for 45 minutes with the technical "help." Furthermore, the LaunchPad registration required to download other software that was irritating and constantly popped up. it took me months to get everything related to LaunchPad off my computer. I've told other students to avoid taking the course if the instructor requires using LaunchPad. it was optional in my class and I was eager to try it out. I feel sorry for students on tight budgets whose professors require it and hope the author can disengage from this platform.
Why would you EVER buy the paper copy of a textbook when you can get it on the Kindle app?!? Using the electronic version of this book helped me to be a better student overall because I could transport it everywhere, easily highlight text, and most importantly, go back to highlighted text to review in a matter of seconds (vs. wasting a billion post-it flags and having to flip through heavy, expensive textbook pages). Best of all, I didn't have to worry about returning it or re-selling it at the end of the semester! I will always use Kindle text books from now on whenever they are available.
I gave this book to a man who has difficulty making meaningful social connections with people. He has Asbergers. He said he read it tirelessly, hungry for what was in the book, thinking this book was meant for him to read. I read a similar book that changed my life years ago. It was a text like this for a communications class. Someone thought I should take communications, so I did. I though it was all about me too!Many people learn this stuff growing up, but I didn't. We didn't communicate really in my family. Love was something you get from someone. After taking that class I met the man of my dreams, and 10 years later we were married. Communications class helped, as well as other communication-oriented classes. Therapy helped too.I never felt I could understand why people did what they did. This book is a start.
this book got the job done so I could take a communications class and received an A. The Amazon Kindle application for the MacBook Pro is actually really nice and extremely handy with taking notes and being able to search any word in the entire book with a few keystrokes
My daughter needed this for school and we sure hate to pay full price for a book she'll only use 8 - 10 weeks so we bought this one used. The price was right, condition was fine and it was exactly what she needed, Thanks
This book was required for a recent college communications course. It was an introductory course and this is an introductory book. Both were totally lame. This book goes too far in the direction of dumbing down material and being conversational -- probably in the hopes of connecting better with beginning college students. I found it to be annoying and inane. I also found it to be very ineffective in delivering the intended information. In an effort to be more conversational, the author interjects too many tangental comments and personal stories. Too much important information (if the professor uses the publisher's tests) is hidden in the otherwise fluffy text. I wouldn't recommend the book or a course based on the book but if you can't avoid either, be prepared to work hard to stay alert while being lulled into sleep by a boring textbook.
This is a book you will keep and return to long after you use it for your class. If you allow it to change your life, if you take what is in the book and change your life based on it, it will do so.
I bought this book because it was required for a college course. But then I began reading a bit on my own (*gasp). It's actually very insightful and well written. Even if this textbook isn't required, it is an excellent guide to communication in general. Extremely helpful if you happen to be a hard-core introvert (like yours truly).
